What the Charity does:
(borrowed with permission from the Chair: Louise Sibley).
We provide educational, therapeutic and recreational cruises and activities to over 2,000 people per year on the Thames, on board our specially equipped and fully accessible community barge, Thames Venturer. The beneficiaries of our services are:
• People of all ages who are vulnerable, isolated and disadvantaged through having learning disabilities, physical disabilities and/or mental health problems; frail older people, carers, young people (especially young carers) and schoolchildren.
• People who want to volunteer with us because we offer a highly rewarding environment, particularly to those in retirement who have valuable life skills, and benefit from this active and stimulating form of volunteering and from the skills training we offer.
We tackle disadvantage by providing boating, education and learning activities cruises to our clients at heavily subsidised rates. These cruises have demonstrable outcomes in terms of tackling social and health problems through the provision of a safe, protected and fully supported environment which enables service users to fully enjoy and benefit from boating as well as achieving educational outcomes in terms of better understanding of the river environment.
